Golf vacations in Brazil are also popular, as there are a number of top-notch greens on which to play.
The North: The Amazon
This is Brazil’s Amazon River and rainforest region, which comprises an area nearly three times the size of Alaska. The key city here is
Manaus, established by the rubber barons as “The Paris of the Tropics.” The port city of
Belem is popular for gastronomy.
The Amazon Rainforest is a land of contrasts, blending exuberant nature and the remains of a glorious past. Here are jungle lodges, which are ideal for experiencing this magnificent area, piranha fishing, alligator spotting, swimming with pink dolphin and local Indian villages. The Northeast: Bahia State
Brazil’s first capital was Salvador, in Bahia State, which is also the heart of the country’s Portuguese and African heritage. Recife may lay claim to Brazil’s most famous beach, Boa Viagem. Trancoso has become a celebrity hotspot.
Central West: The Pantanal
The Pantanal is the largest flooded lowland on the planet, and the third largest environmental reserve in the world. In the dry season, from late May to early September, wildlife gather at its small lakes to find water. The capital, Brasilia, is a showcase of modernistic architecture.
The Southeast: Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, the two bustling cosmopolitan and party centers of the country are in this region. In Rio one can't miss a visit to Sugar Loaf Mountain, or the city's Botanical Garden, rated one of the most important biospheres in the world. Buzios is the St. Tropez of Brazil full of boutiques, bistros, live music and bars. Colonial Paraty thrives on a bohemian vibe.
The South: Iguazu Falls
Iguazu Falls is world renowned and a UNESCO Natual Heritage of Humanity site. The 275 falls are one of the world's great natural phenomena, surrounded by a subtropical nature reserve. To see the falls when water level is highest, visit from November to April.
Santa Catarina State
Also in The South, Santa Catarina features white sand beaches, tropical forests, snowy mountains and European culture. About the size of Ireland, this small Brazilian state has over 350 miles of beaches, lined by lagoons, rivers and mountains. A strong Portuguese heritage has evolved as Azorean fisherman, Italian farmers and German industrialists moved to the state. Santa Catarina features a high quality of life, good infrastructure, and is extremely proud of its cuisine.
For those seeking adventure, popular activities include diving at the Arvoredo Biological Reserve, rafting the rapids in the Itajai-Acu River, hang-gliding in Jaragua do Sul, hiking in Florianopolis or the Serra do Corvo Branco mountains.
