For the inveterate traveler, diversity, culture and energy in a new mix can be hard to find. South Africa has it! The sophisticated beaches at Camp's Bay in Cape Town can be supplanted, just a couple of hours later, with penguins along the road to the tip of the Cape, and soon after that by a pack of wild baboons confronting cars stopped for photography. The next afternoon it could be a formal tea at the famous Hotel Cape Grace on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

The entire in-country experience is a bombardment of the senses constantly shifting from sublime to wild. For animal viewing the northern part is the best, with numerous private game reserves. No reason to rough it here. Many private reserves have villas with lots of space and private pools. Food is gourmet and lavishly presented. Then the wild comes in after dark as an armed ranger with a rifle escorts you back after dinner to retire for the evening. (The lions may still be hungry). On safari in early morning or late afternoon, the intense feeling of seeing and experiencing native animals in the wild only a few feet away is beyond description.
