East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania & Beyond
The magic in East Africa is all around - the enormous plethora of wildlife, the majesty of the landscape, the colorful outfits of the Masai and Samburu people. Let us help you discover the trip of a lifetime!
Kenya's Highlights
From its great migratory herds to an incredible abundance of birdlife, from tropical rainforest to the depths of the Indian Ocean teeming with fish, Kenya is home to an endless array of ecosystems, a world of awesome natural wonders.
Stay a few days in the Amboseli region - towering Mt. Kilimanjaro above you, plains and rivers around you - and animals everywhere! view several species at once - elephants playing in the waterholes, zebra grazing nearby -you hardly know where to point your camera first!
The area north of Nairobi is completely different - not so many predators so you can ride horses, walk with a local Samburu guide, take off on an ATV, or spend an afternoon in the spa. This area has plenty of elephant, giraffe, and other plains animals so you will still get your fill of game viewing. Sleep on a platform under the stars - it's once in a lifetime!
Don't miss the Masai Mara - the most famous savannah in the world! Lions, leopards, cheetah - the gorgeous African cats are there. Great herds of wildlife, nearly 1.5 million, move through the Masai Mara on the way to the Serengeti with the annual migration between July and October.
Consider a stay in a bush home - small properties with between 4 to 20 chalets or tents. This provides a more intimate feeling, closer to the experience in Southern Africa. A few days in each area staying in various bush homes or luxury tented camps gives you the "Out of Africa" experience of your imagination!
Tanzania's Diversity
Tanzania has 14 National parks and 33 game reserves. Here are the famous Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, Selous Game Reserve and Lake Manyara, home to the famous tree-climbing lions. The Serengeti in Tanzania is an extension of the Mara - the animals don't know there is a border, so they cross back and forth searching for food and water. Tented camps can be pure luxury here. Or stay in a manor house, complete with butlers and tennis courts! If you are more of an adventurer, there are all levels of camps, from mobile tented safaris, to simple lodges. A highlight is hot-air ballooning!
East Africa is also the best place for meeting locals. You can visit a Masai village, have a chat with the Samburu ladies as they design beautiful bead work, take a walk with a local guide.
The high concentration of wildlife often attracts the first time visitor to East Africa - but don't forget this area can be combined with gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda, or scuba diving the reefs off Zanzibar! Read more about the Wildebeest Migration.
