Belarus :: Overview |

Independent since 1991 but economically and politically close to Russia, Belarus is a broad sweep of forest and farmland situated just to the east of Poland. Its cities are lively and full of historical interest, its birch groves and marshlands full of wildlife. The Dnieper flows through the eastern part of the country. Hrodna, Brest, Grodno, and Vitebsk-the cities of Belarus tell stories which reach many hundreds of years into the past.
