Destination Cities: Minsk, the capital, is at least 1000 years old, although the oldest buildings to be seen today date from the 17th-century. The city now reflects the Soviet occupation in the symmetry of its urban layout, with wide embankments flanking the Svisloch River. The Belarusian Ballet and the National Museum of Belarusian History and Culture are landmarks; other cultural institutions include theatre, a circus, and a famous puppet theatre. In the suburb of Troitskoye Predmestye, you will see the Minsk of the 19th century. In Brest, tour the Brest Fortress, where German forces were held off during World War II ballet, theatre, puppet theatre and a circus. Brest also has a renowned puppet theatre. Hrodna is a fascinating city for history buffs.
Points of Interest: 13th century Njasvizh was fortified in the mid-16th century to protect it from invasion, and some of the fine architecture of this time survives, particularly the 16th century town hall, one of the oldest in the country. The 16th century Slutsk Gate was redone in 18th century Baroque style. Also see the Farny Polish Roman Catholic Church and the Radziwill Palace Fortress, now a sanatorium, designed by the Italian architect Bernardoni in the 16th century.
