Heard and McDonald Islands :: Overview |

Australia administers the volcanic islands in the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands, which consists of two parts—Heard, which was probably discovered in 1833 by the sealers who wanted to land there while on their quests for sealskins; and the McDonald Group of a tiny island and several adjacent rocks, 38 km to the west, sighted in 1854 and landed on in 1971. Neither is inhabited, although there has been a scientific station on Heard (1947-1955). |
